During the second world war, at about 4pm on 15 February 1942, a few Japanese shells were fired from the direction of Johor; hit the church roof and brought it down with the ceiling, destroyed many pews, electric lights and fittings, and damaged many other Church articles. Fortunately no one was in the church at that time as the parishioners had already attended the Chinese New Year thanksgiving service that morning.
